Dear Colleagues,
Please find herewith some information on the Finnish parliamentary elections, held last Sunday.
On behalf of the Finnish delegation,
Best regards,

Outcome of Finnish parliamentary elections
Finland’s Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and the Centre Party (Kesk.) won Finland’s parliamentary elections yesterday, narrowly beating the opposition Conservative National Coalition Party (Kok.) by a margin of one percent, giving Prime Minister Vanhanen the right to form a new four-year coalition. As Prime Minister Vanhanen (Kesk.) said, the result is clear: ”The result is clear. We are number 1 in votes and number 1 in seats”.
The ruling Centre Party received 23.1 percent of votes, followed closely by the Conservatives (22.2%) and the Social Democrats (21.5%). Swedish Speaking Party (RKP) did also well. RKP gained one seat more to the parliament.
Although Centre party managed to remain as the biggest party second time in row, both current coalition partners – Centre party and the Social Democrats – lost seats in the 200-member parliament, while the Conservatives will be represented by ten more MPs compared to the 2003 elections.
ALDE Member, Mr Paavo Väyrynen was also elected to the Parliament from his constituency in Lapland. Mr Väyrynen got 10 937 votes, a very significant number of votes, being the leader in his region.
The government negotiations will start officially on 29 March. They are expected to be long. Due to the tight outcome of the elections all options are basically open. In practice a majority government should have 120 MPs.
The MP group of the Centre Party did undergo quite many changes. 16 out of its 51 Centre MPs are newcomers.
